Grip is trained incidentally by almost every program that exists, and incidental training produces exactly what it sounds like, an inconsistent, unplanned result that eventually becomes the ceiling on everything built above it.

A dedicated grip block does not just build stronger hands. It changes what the rest of the program is allowed to access. Once the hands stop opening early, the lats, the traps, the glutes and the hamstrings finally get asked to do the job the program always intended for them.

What grip actually is, in plain words

Grip strength is produced by a combination of muscles inside the hand itself and a larger set of muscles in the forearm whose tendons run down through the wrist to control the fingers. The forearm flexor muscles, sitting on the palm side of the forearm, contract to close the fingers around a bar, a handle or a plate, and they do most of the heavy work in any strong grip. Support grip, holding a loaded bar or handle for an extended period without crushing it, is what actually limits a deadlift or a farmer carry, and it depends more on endurance in the fingers and forearm than on peak force. Pinch grip, holding an object between the fingers and thumb without wrapping the palm around it, is a third pattern again, used less often but relevant to plate work and to loading odd shaped objects. Why grip fatigues on a different clock

Straps have a legitimate place in a program, used deliberately on the heaviest top sets once grip training is already happening elsewhere in the week. Used as a default from week one, they quietly guarantee the forearm problem never gets solved, and the lifter simply carries the same ceiling forward year after year without ever testing whether it could have moved.

A defensible weekly grip protocol

Dead hangs. Two to three sets of maximum time hang from a pull up bar, twice weekly, building steadily toward sixty seconds per set before adding load through a weighted vest or a hanging plate.

Farmer carries. Three sets of thirty to forty metres at a challenging load, once weekly, positioned at the end of a lower body or pulling session rather than at the start of it.

Plate pinches. Three sets of fifteen to twenty five second holds, pinching a pair of weight plates together smooth side facing out, twice weekly, to target the pinch pattern that carries and rows rarely address at all.

The mastermind frame

The lifter who finally addresses their grip is rarely chasing bigger forearms for their own sake. They are removing a quiet gatekeeper that has been deciding, without permission, how much work the back, the legs and the whole posterior chain were allowed to do. Strength built anywhere in the body is only as useful as the weakest link willing to transmit it, and for a great many lifters that weakest link has been sitting at the end of their own arm the entire time. It is an unglamorous fix. Nobody posts a video of a dead hang the way they post a new deadlift number. The dead hang is very often the reason the new deadlift number eventually becomes possible.

Train the hand with the same seriousness given to the muscle it serves. The bar will still slip sometimes. It will slip a great deal less often, and the muscle underneath it will finally get to find out what it was actually capable of all along. That discovery, quiet and unglamorous as it is, is usually worth more than any single new exercise added anywhere else in the program.
