Each one fell apart somewhere around week five, not because the model was wrong on paper but because his actual week, a late flight, a sick child, a project deadline that ate his sleep, never appeared anywhere in the spreadsheet's assumptions. He is not undisciplined. He is running a model built for a laboratory schedule against a life that was never going to cooperate with one.
This is the honest starting point for any conversation about periodisation. The published research on linear, undulating and block models is genuinely useful. It was also generated in controlled settings with compliant subjects and predictable weeks, a condition almost no working adult actually lives inside. The question worth asking is not only which model produces the best theoretical curve. It is which model keeps producing a curve at all once real life starts interrupting it.
Section one. What periodisation actually is
Periodisation is the deliberate, planned variation of training variables, typically volume and intensity, across time, designed to manage fatigue while progressively building capacity. A well periodised program built on top of chronic sleep debt or under eating will still stall, because the structural variable being managed, training stress, is only one input among several the body is weighing at once. Periodisation organises the training stimulus. It does not organise the rest of a life around it.
Section two. Linear periodisation, the classic shape
Linear periodisation moves progressively from higher volume, lower intensity training toward lower volume, higher intensity training across a training block, often spanning eight to sixteen weeks. Early weeks build a base of general work capacity. Later weeks sharpen toward strength or performance, culminating in a peak.
The model is simple to plan, easy to explain and produces reliable results, particularly for less experienced lifters and for athletes preparing toward a specific competition date. Its weakness is inflexibility. A missed week during the base phase pushes the whole structure backwards, and a lifter whose life does not allow a clean run of consecutive weeks often finds the model quietly falling out of sync with itself.
Its strength is precisely why so many first programs use it. A newer lifter benefits enormously from any sensible progressive structure, and linear periodisation is the easiest to understand and the easiest to coach. The problems tend to surface later, once a lifter has years of training behind them and a life that has grown more complicated, not less.
Section three. Undulating periodisation, the responsive shape
Undulating periodisation varies volume and intensity more frequently, often within the same week or even the same session, rather than across long blocks. Daily undulating periodisation might schedule a heavy strength day, a moderate hypertrophy day and a lighter, higher volume day within a single training week, repeating that pattern across the training cycle rather than progressing through distinct phases.
Research comparing undulating and linear models has generally found comparable strength and hypertrophy outcomes, with some trials showing a modest edge for undulating approaches in trained lifters over longer timeframes. The practical advantage that matters more than either result is resilience. Because the model does not depend on a specific multi week sequence, a missed session or a disrupted week is far easier to absorb without derailing the whole structure. A lifter who has to skip Wednesday still has the rest of the pattern intact for the following week.
Section four. Block periodisation, the specialist shape
Block periodisation concentrates training on a narrow set of qualities within each block, typically accumulation, building general work capacity, then transmutation, converting that capacity into more sport specific qualities, then realisation, tapering toward peak performance for a specific event. It is the model most associated with competitive strength and power athletes with a fixed competition date, because it allows a coach to sequence very specific adaptations in a deliberate order.
Its strength is precision for a known target date. Its weakness, for the lifter without a competition on the calendar, is that the model's logic depends on a fixed endpoint to sequence towards. Without a real deadline, block periodisation tends to drift into an arbitrary schedule that provides less benefit than its complexity would suggest.
Section five. Why the research draw matters more than the winner
The honest reading of the comparative research is that all three models, executed with reasonable consistency and adequate volume, produce broadly similar outcomes over a year of training. Meta analyses comparing periodised models to each other find smaller differences between models than the difference between any periodised approach and no planned structure at all. This is not a disappointing finding. It is a liberating one. It means the lifter is not choosing between a winning model and a losing one. He is choosing between structures that all work, on the basis of which one his actual week can sustain.
This reframes the whole decision. A perfect linear block that a lifter completes forty percent of the time produces less adaptation across a year than an undulating structure a lifter actually completes eighty percent of the time. Adherence, not theoretical superiority, decides which model wins in a real training life.
There is also a hybrid path worth naming. Many experienced coaches now blend elements of these models rather than running any single one in pure form, using a broadly linear arc across a training year while allowing undulating flexibility week to week within it. This is less a fourth model than an acknowledgement that the three named categories describe tendencies more than rigid boxes, and that the best structure for an individual lifter often borrows from more than one of them.
Section six. A defensible way to choose
Audit the week first. Look honestly at how many training days are genuinely predictable versus how many are vulnerable to disruption from work, family or travel, before choosing a model. Most lifters have never written this down, and the exercise alone often reveals why a previous, theoretically sound program quietly failed.
Match the model to the volatility. A highly predictable week can support a linear block. A volatile week, three or more unpredictable days most weeks, is usually better served by an undulating structure that tolerates a missed session without collapsing.
Reserve block periodisation for a real date. Use it only when an actual competition, event or test exists on the calendar to sequence towards.
Build a return protocol. Whichever model is chosen, decide in advance what a missed session means for the plan, rather than discovering the answer mid week under stress. A simple rule, such as resuming at the next scheduled session rather than trying to make up lost volume, prevents one disrupted week from becoming a disrupted month.
Track adherence, not just numbers. Percentage of planned sessions completed across a month is a more honest progress metric for most lifters than the theoretical elegance of the model on paper.
Support recovery inputs regardless of model. Choose the model that fits the life, not just the one that looks best on paper. The body adapts to what actually happens, not to what was planned.
